Being given the opportunity to take on the role of the HTM 301 (Kaleidoscope Course) Teacher’s Assistant was an amazing opportunity within my last semester in the program. The course is focused on service leadership and development at a very personal level. Throughout the course students participate in two simulations. During the simulations we ask industry professionals to observe a team of six students and provide individual feedback using our structured competency model and format, which the students have been studying. The assessment of student behavior requires the industry professionals to observe several students while they work on a project with a small group, and provide feedback on your observations.
From this, I was able to expand and grow my professional network with about 32 industry professionals around San Diego County, ranging in a variety of fields within the hospitality industry. I was also able to work on my communication skills by sending hundreds of emails and setting up meetings with the professors of the course to touch base and even plan and organize the simulation events. I was given the task to recruit the industry assessors that would be attending and about 24 student actors to help participate in the simulations. This position requires one to be very detail organized and good with communication and very professional. I learned a lot about myself and happy I was able to obtain this opportunity.
