HYATT REGENCY MISSION BAY SPA & MARNIA

San Diego, California

From May to August 2016, I had the opportunity to work in my first hotel position. I was the Front Desk Agent. This position also fulfilled one of the two internships I was required to complete within my schooling. Certain expectations and assumptions came to mind before taking the position, of how this job might be. I thought it would be a great experience and would not receive a lot of bad complaints but more good comments more than anything. After completing my time, I did come to realize that my assumptions were completely wrong and I ended up finding the front desk is not the right position for me. It was difficult for me to be constantly yelled at over situations that could be easily fixed. The responsibilities and tasks the front desk completes are very repetitive and standing in one place for a long period of time throughout the shifts was difficult for me. However, the things I was able to learn in this position was tremendous. Learning about how each department functions and works together, was interesting to see. It amazes me how each department has specific functions and tasks but their overall goal is to please the guest and make it a wonderful experience. Communication was a key factor, from PBX to the walkie-talkies that were used throughout the hotel and even the communication from upper to lower management. After working in a hotel, it makes me truly appreciate what is offered to me from my experience to the services that are given. It is very hard work and much dedication from every staff member. I will never undermine the position again and rather help educate others around me who are unaware of what it takes. I am very pleased I took this opportunity because in my senior year, those skills are still being used.
