National Society of Minorities in Hospitality Fall 2015

MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

From the moment I entered the Hospitality & Tourism Management Program in the Fall of 2014, they stressed every student to get involved in a student association. One of them being, the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality or NSMH. NSMH is a nationally recognized student association with the SDSU NSMH Chapter being one of the largest chapters in the nation with about 40-50 students. They host a variety of events from their main events like Nationals and Regional Conferences, to mentoring local high school students, a day at Petco Park to watch a Padres Game, a White Elephant Christmas event, and hosting Mr. & Ms. and receiving a chance to win your way to the Nationals Conference. There are many other events, but this student association is highly involved in our program and hospitality week.

I knew I wanted to help and be a part of this chapter more than just a member. So I applied for the Membership Director Position. I was a little nervous about the commitment and the task and responsibilities involved. However, no looking back after stepping down, I can truly say it was a wonderful and such a fun experience to be a part of. In this position I would be in charge of setting up external board meetings with information for members to come every other week and learn about upcoming events while having a good time networking with other students. I would always try and promote NSMH to students to encourage more signups. I really enjoyed meeting new people and the opportunities this student association has provided me. From traveling around the US (Pittsburgh to Las Vegas) and exposing the students to the hospitality industry in a new way. At the conferences we would network with students around the US and expand our professional network to recruiters from major companies like Marriott, Starwood, Sodexo, Four Seasons and Disney, just to name a few.
